A brief history of the Reina Sofía

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía occupies the former General Hospital of Madrid, an 18th-century Neoclassical building designed by Francisco Sabatini. The building was restored and converted into a museum, which opened to the public in 1986 and was elevated to national museum status in 1988.

The extension designed by Jean Nouvel opened in 2005: the glass towers and spectacular red canopy doubled the museum's floor space and turned it into one of Europe's most modern museum complexes. Today the Reina Sofía is the second most visited museum in Spain, with Picasso's Guernica — brought from New York in 1981 — as its star work and an emblem of 20th-century Spanish culture.
