How to get to the Reina Sofía Museum
The Reina Sofía Museum is in the heart of Madrid, right next to Atocha station. Its location is ideal: getting there by public transport is very easy, and driving is not the best option given the heavy traffic and limited parking in the area.
Address: Calle Santa Isabel 52, 28012 Madrid.
By metro: Estación del Arte (Line 1)
The most convenient stop is Estación del Arte on Line 1 (red). Coming out of the metro, the museum is less than 2 minutes on foot towards Calle Santa Isabel. You can also use the Atocha Renfe (Line 1) stop, about 5 minutes' walk away.
The station's name is no coincidence: Madrid's Paseo del Arte (Art Walk) brings the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía within a few minutes' walk of each other. If you have several days in the city, the Paseo del Arte is the most efficient way to visit all three great museums.
By Cercanías and train (Atocha)
Atocha station (Madrid Cercanías and long-distance Renfe services) is about 5 minutes on foot from the museum. Leaving the station, head south along the Paseo del Prado or Calle Atocha to Calle Santa Isabel. The route is well signposted and completely flat.
This option is particularly handy if you arrive in Madrid by high-speed AVE or inter-city train and want to head straight to the museum from the station without stopping at your hotel first.
By bus
Several EMT (Madrid municipal bus) lines stop near the Reina Sofía:
- Lines 6, 14, 26, 32, 45 and others have stops on the Paseo del Prado or at Atocha, 5 minutes on foot from the museum.
- Use the EMT journey planner or Google Maps from your starting point to find the most direct combination.
On foot from Atocha
If you are at Atocha or anywhere along the Paseo del Prado, the Reina Sofía is just 5 minutes on foot. The walk is pleasant: follow the Paseo del Prado south and turn left onto Calle Santa Isabel. The historic façade of the Sabatini building — the former 18th-century Hospital de San Carlos — is unmistakable.
The Paseo del Arte (Art Walk): three great museums in one stroll
The Reina Sofía is part of what is known as the Paseo del Arte (Art Walk), together with the Museo del Prado (about 10 minutes on foot) and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. If you are spending several days in Madrid, combining all three is a unique cultural experience that very few destinations in the world can match at such a short distance.
